  • Fourth and Fifth graders from P.S. 7 traveled from East Harlem to visit the Brooklyn Showcase School in December. They experienced a garden class and kitchen class, giving them a taste of the edible education they'll soon receive at P.S. 7.
  • In garden class P.S. 7 students studied, then harvested, kale for kitchen class.
  • P.S. 7 students explored compost for worms and grubs.
  • The P.S. 7 students prepared kale two ways -- raw and cooked. Here, they juice lemons for the kale salad.
  • Clean plates! One parent chaperone said she was 'ecstatic' because it was the first time she'd seen her son eat a green vegetable!
  • This summer we hosted a weekly farm stand where our students inexpensively sold fresh produce from the garden to the community.
  • Harvest Days are an opportunity for students to harvest produce that is used to make school lunch in the cafeteria.
  • In spring 2011 we hosted the first series of our Family Cooking Nights. Families from P.S. 216 came together to learn how to prepare a delicious and affordable recipe from fresh and seasonal ingredients. Family Cooking Nights allow parents the opportunity to learn how to use the fresh ingredients that their children are growing in the garden and share a meal together.
  • In July 2011 we hosted three sessions of our first Family Summer Program. At each session, families from the P.S. 216 community spent their mornings working in the garden and preparing and sharing a meal together.
  • Edible Schoolyard NYC hosts Family Cooking Nights once per month that bring P.S. 216 families together to harvest and prepare a meal.
  • At our Family Cooking Nights, students and their families learn how to prepare a fresh, seasonal feast.
  • For two afternoons each week, Open Garden gives students the chance to explore the garden on their own terms and to work on projects that interest them.
  • Some students just can't get enough of the garden! Luckily, Open Garden is an opportunity to spend two afternoons a week here.
  • On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, you'll find the garden at P.S. 216 teeming with engaged, curious students participating in Open Garden.
